Relative Goals

Goals Created (GC)

(Player Goals + (.5 x Player Assists)) x (Team Goals/(Team Goals + (.5 x Team Assists)))

  • Quantifies a players overall offensive performance relative to his teams performance, holding the value of a goal and assist constant across seasons

Goals Versus Threshold (GVT)

(Goals x Goal Value) + ((Assists x Assists Value) - (Games Played x Contribution Threshold))

  • Calculations separated by position, quantifies player offensive performance relative to league performance in a given season

    • Goal Value = (1.5 x League Goals)/(League Assists + 1.5 x League Goals)

    • Assist Value = (Goal Value/1.5)

    • Contribution Threshold = ((sum for all players (Goals x Goal Value + Assists x Assist Value))/(sum for all players (Games Played))) x .58

      • .58 represents the performance of a "threshold" player, similar to a replacement player in baseball, Alan Ryder's .58 threshold is used representing 58% of average performance as replacement level, though some (like Tom Awad) use .75

Marginal Goals

All Marginal Goal Stats (MGx)

(Player Goals Created) - ((7/12) x (Player Games Played) x ((Sum Goals Created) / (Sum Games Played))

  • Isolates a players offensive production and compares it to the average production of a given level

    • This given level effects who is summed in the latter half of the equation, comparing a player's production to the following levels:

      • MGl = Marginal Goals relative to league

      • MGa = Marginal Goals relative to age

      • MGcl = Marginal Goals relative to class (divisional class, i.e. 1A or 2A)

      • MGs = Marginal Goals relative to section

      • MGy = Marginal Goals relative to year (i.e. Junior, Senior, etc.)

      • MGp = Marginal Goals relative to position

      • MGc = Marginal Goals relative to conference

Points Shares

Offensive Point Shares (OPS)

(Player Marginal Goals [MGl])/(Marginal Goals per Point)

  • Assigns value to player production relative to overall team performance in terms of standing points responsible for

    • Marginal Goals per Point = (sum league marginal goals)/(sum league standing points)

Defensive Point Shares (DPS)

(Player Marginal Goals Against)/(Marginal Goals per Point)

  • Quantifies a player defensive performance relative to the league and assigns contribution in terms of standing points responsible for

    • Player Marginal Goals Against:

      • For MSHSL (no TOI, +/- data) = (Proportion of Weighted GP) x (5/7) x (Position Adjustment) x (Team Marginal Goals Against)

        • At this level, DPS is largely indicative of team rather than individual defensive performance

      • For CHL/USHL/NAHL/NCAA = (Proportion of Weighted GP) × (Proportion of Team Marginal Goals Against) × (Position Adjustment) × (Team Marginal Goals Against) + (+/- Adjustment)

        • Position Adjustment: For Forwards = 5/7 | For Defensemen = 10/7

        • Proportion of Weighted Games Played = (Player Games Played*)/((Games Played by Forwards on Team + (2 x Games Played by Defensemen on Team)))

          • *2 x Player Games Played for defensemen

        • Proportion of Team Marginal Goals Against: ((7 - (2 × ((Team Shots Against Per Game) / (League Shots Against Per Game)))) / 7)

        • Team Marginal Goals Against = (1 + (7/12)) x (Team Games) x (League Goals Per Game) - (Team Goals Against)

        • +/- Adjustment: (1/7) × (Position adjustment) × ((+/-) - (GP) × ((Sum Team +/- by Position) / (Sum Team GP by Position)))

Total Point Shares (PS)

  • (Player Offensive Point Share) + (Player Defensive Point Share)

    • Total contribution to team by a player measured in standing points responsible for
